You Don’t Need to Start Over This Summer — Just Keep Going Gently

As we move into June, there can sometimes be a subtle shift in energy.

The days are longer, life feels a little lighter, and there’s often a sense that we should be doing more — more movement, more activity, more “making the most” of the season.

And yet, for many people, this is also the point where routines start to slip.

Life gets busier. Holidays appear on the horizon. Motivation fluctuates. And suddenly there’s a feeling that maybe it’s time to “start again”.

But what if you didn’t need to start over at all?

Consistency matters more than starting again

One of the most common patterns I see is the “all or nothing” approach to movement and wellbeing.

We start something new with good intentions — yoga, Pilates, exercise — and for a while it feels great. Then life gets in the way, and rather than simply picking it back up, we feel like we’ve fallen off track completely.

So we wait for Monday. Or next month. Or September.

But your body doesn’t need constant restarts.
It benefits far more from gentle consistency over time.

Even if your practice has been patchy, it still counts. You haven’t gone backwards. You’ve simply been living your life.

Why yoga and reformer Pilates work so well together

Yoga and reformer Pilates are often seen as separate practices, but they actually complement each other beautifully.

They support the body in different ways, while working towards a similar goal: feeling strong, mobile, balanced and connected.

Yoga tends to focus more on:

  • mobility and flexibility

  • breath awareness

  • nervous system regulation

  • releasing tension and calming the mind

It encourages you to slow down, listen inwardly, and create space in both body and mind.

Reformer Pilates, on the other hand, tends to focus more on:

  • strength and stability

  • core engagement

  • alignment and control

  • building functional movement patterns

It helps support posture, muscular balance and overall physical resilience.

Together, they create a really powerful combination.

One helps you soften and release, the other helps you strengthen and support.

Neither is better than the other — they simply offer different forms of care for the body.

Summer is a supportive time to build rhythm, not pressure

There can be a misconception that summer is a time to push harder — to get fitter, leaner, more active.

But in reality, summer can actually be a wonderful opportunity to build a more sustainable rhythm with your movement.

Not intense routines. Not rigid plans. Just a steady return to yourself.

Even one or two classes a week can make a noticeable difference in how your body feels — especially when it’s consistent over time.

What your body really benefits from

Rather than asking “How much should I be doing?”, it can be more helpful to ask:

  • What helps my body feel supported right now?

  • What kind of movement leaves me feeling better afterwards, not worse?

  • What can I realistically maintain, even in a busy season?

For most people, the answer isn’t more intensity — it’s more balance.

A mix of strength, mobility, breath and rest creates a body that feels both capable and calm.

Small practice still counts

It’s important to remember that your practice doesn’t have to be perfect to be effective.

A single yoga class in a week still supports your nervous system.
One reformer Pilates session still builds strength and awareness.
Even showing up inconsistently is still part of your practice.

There is no “all or nothing” when it comes to your wellbeing.

It all counts.

The goal isn’t to do more — it’s to feel better

It’s easy to get caught up in doing movement for external reasons — appearance, fitness goals, or pressure to “keep up”.

But the deeper value of both yoga and Pilates is how you feel inside your body.

More grounded.
More spacious.
More stable.
More at ease.

That feeling doesn’t come from pushing harder. It comes from showing up consistently, in a way that feels kind and realistic for you.

A gentle invitation for June

As we move into summer, consider letting go of the idea that you need to start again.

Instead, simply ask yourself how you can continue — gently, imperfectly, and without pressure.

Whether it’s yoga, reformer Pilates, or a combination of both, your body benefits most from your return, not your perfection.

You don’t need a new plan.
You don’t need a fresh start.
You just need to keep going — in a way that feels supportive for you.

And sometimes, that is more than enough.
